During winter training/ conditioning i did all the erg workouts with them but that was also when i was a rower. other than rowing we never did any other workouts, but during the first while when we were training at syracuse's indoor rowing place with a tank and everything, i wasnt allowed to do the erg session because i had to call the changes and keep them motivated and of course no room in the tanks for me and i had to call. But when we would do our ab workouts i would do it with them and also when we would do our legs arms and full body workout i would do it and call at the same time pretty much thats what i did.

i'm a guy's coxswain, so running with them is a struggle (they are like a foot taller than me), and the reason i switched to coxing is because of my back, so i don't erg too much. but i will erg with them from time to time and i still run when they run, just at my own pace.

my coach made a point to tell the whole team that it's not part of the coxswain's role to work out with the team because we have other important things, like steering, motivating, etc., to work on. she said it's up to the rower to only worry about getting themselves in the best possible shape and not worry about what the coxswain is supposed to do. hope that made sense.

that makes sense to me.
I think it makes sense for the cox to participate in conditioning drills when he is also a rower; outside of that, the coxswain does not need to be particularly fit, so the reasons for him to work out and run are:
1- by "solidarity" for the team, to show he's "one of the guys"
2- because he might as well do something good for his body and his fitness rather than sit there doing nothing.

I am a female cox on a men's team. I do all the land workouts with them except erging- in the weight room I just use very light weights (comparatively); I do the body weight circuits, runs (distance running in high school helps there), and cross training. When they erg, I cox and do cox jobs - like attending footstretchers, writing scores, etc.
Some coxswains on my team do the workouts with me, others don't. It is personal preference. For me, it has earned alot of respect with the rowers.
To those who are concerned with weight gain from strength sessions: males gain weight from it because of their testosterone levels, for women, strength training will increase toned muscle and burn fat but add minimal weight.

this winter, we spent 2 weeks in the pool or running (because we couldn't be in our gym), so i did that with everyone. i will erg occasionally, but we run out of ergs, so it's more important for them to erg. but i stay after practice every day to work out, and they know it, so they don't really care that i don't work out with them.

i cox guys, but i rowed in high school (started coxing because of a back injury) so sometimes they do convince me pretty well to erg with them. one time i told them that if i beat anyone on the team for a 20 minute piece that they would have to erg again, but if they all beat me we could run after instead. it made them happy (we were gonna run anyway) and they could joke about it, even though they were still working. we're a club team, so we can be pretty laid back at times.
