Hey Hey, Whats Up? Sorry for the long drawn-out heading but I have to share my findings with the world... During my time coxing, I have found many a way to annoy other rowers whilst making mine go faster but none to this day compare to what I am about to share...

Music, has huge subconscious effects on you... It can cause depression or elation, by picking the right song to play to your rowers before a race can infact make them row faster, I found this out at Nationals, I played my rowers a song called Reanimator by Amon Tobin, their time during the heats was a 6:03 and when the final came, we destroyed with a 5:52, this drop in time was not due to weather conditions as it remained constant over the entire weekend.

I am not saying that the music was the sole reason for an 11 second drop in time but Im just giving some advice to coxies who wish to know how to put their rowers in an indestructible mindset... Other good songs include: Prodigy - Breathe, O Fortuna, Be Quiet And Drive - Deftones.

Aaaaaight, well thats me outa here... hope you guys have fun and ill see ya later!

Yea, I would have to agree wholehartedly. There is one song that always makes seemes to make be cox better in intense racing situations. I can't say that I have tried it with my rowers though.

yeah, heres my cd

Amon Tobin - Bridge

Amon Tobin - Reanimator

Incubus - Pardon Me

Prodigy - Breathe

Deftones - Be Quiet and Drive

Jurgen Vries - The Theme

O Fortuna

Kittie - Charlotte

Tool - Schism

Tool - The Patient

Rammstein - Du Hast

the Amon Tobin is like acid jazz, so its quite fast but very chilled at the same time, I highly recommend using that... Some of the songs I put down are quite heavy but my rowers like it so its fine, your best bet is to use older songs that your rowers like.. eg. Golden Brown by The Stranglers...

Oh yeah and in reply to the comment that music was illegal, I dont play it during the race, I use it as a tool for focusing my rowers in pre-race warmups and talks... I also tend to use the same song before every race, it triggers something in their subconscious that tells them its time to race... I also tend to stay away from songs that speak about winning or that speak about being the best... It tends to make us arrogant...

well, thats me outa here again,

cheers, GothCox

From what I have heard, I thought that technically music was illegal during a race....

she said before a race, not during, I can assure you there is nothing illegal about listening to music before a race

Die Leichte Kavallerie Overture by Franz von Suppé is wonderful before a race as are many of Rossini's overtures, especially Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Of course, my taste not be the same as yours. On that note, perhaps it's better to let rowers listen to their own music on their own headphones in order to get psyched. Some may choose a little silence as the best way for them to get focused before a race. In general, it's best to remember that each rower must decide for himself/herself what's best for them.

Fortunately, at the junior level musical tastes tend not to vary much from rower to rower as compared to the tastes of collegiate (or older) rowers, so perhaps a junior cox can get away with playing certain songs before a race.

By the way, some other favourites of mine include "Catch Us If You Can" by the Dave Clark Five, "Hold Your Head Up" by Argent, and "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams.

Remember, GothCox, while the song might have helped your crew "focus in" just prior to the race, probably the real reason your crew went faster is because they were well-coached and well-coxed.

Well, as i said in the first post, I didnt give music the full credit for the time drop, I merely stated that it puts my rowers in an indestructible mindset even if they dont appreciate the music... The style is that of an aggressive nature which i believe is one of the key points to 2k racing... I do however see we have contrasting viewpoints on this issue so I will leave it there...

the theme from top gun is a particular favourite at our club along with prodigy and rage against the machine. we tend to get in the mood for races the night before by watching top gun or true blue.

this summer our boys' A Crew listened to their songs of choice on a diskman as they were heading up to the start during our practice time trials. All they did was get their coxy to bring his diskman and cover the mic of the coxbox with the headphones . . . not a bad idea I think . . .

FYI: They turned it off once they got to the start (before our coaches could hear them) lol.

I was recommended to listen to very heavy rock music before a race to get myself going. People's music taste are so different that I don't believe that you should subject people to music they dislike. However I think that I will try some inspiring classical music next time.

As I row as well as cox, I can relate to this, and I always need something I can sing to in the car on the way (I also use music to wind down after) and my favourite is prob "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams. It's me Dad's, but I know all the words coz he has it on so often, and turned up real loud its well good!
