well my coach is letting me pick my boats this year and i've always done the light weight fours and then the last two regattas the varsity eight. But since i'm a three year varsity coxie and the only one returning i get to pick my boats...should i go with the light weight boats (8,4,4) or the varsity heavy boats (8,4,4)?

Things to consider:

1. What is your goal for the season? To win races? to have fun? which crews will help you get there?

2. Which crews are the most experienced and can help you take your coxing to the next level?

apart from the fact that lightweight RULE! (ahem, sorry), I think coxing heavyweight's is different than coxing lightwight. Depending on the rowers' skill level (are they freshmen or senior year pro's?) I think with lightweights you will spend more time 'motivating' and with heavyweights more time keeping their technique up, to compensate their weaknesses. Lightweights tend to more technically adept than heavy's, so they'll need less coaching (coxing) on that point, while heavyweights are strong anyway but technically not so adept all the time, so you'll have to coach them on that point a lot.

To conclude, if you want to win a lot then you should base your decision on your own qualities. If you're a great motivator, then go for the lighties. If you want to be an overall great coxie, then go for the team you think you can learn the most from.
