Nationals was a fun time. We bonded as a team and also as friends. From where our boat house is located, it was a twelve hour bus ride. I couldn't wait to get off the bus. Then the next day when races were supposed to start was delayed because they found a dead body in the river....fun? So after all that was cleaned up we got to go out on the water to practice.

My boat didn't race until wednesday so I had a while to wait. But every day I went down to that course and watched the boats race. Man - it was so much fun. I mean we were at Nationals this is a big thing. I saw the way some people reacted to the losing at such a big regatta.

Finally my day came...it was race day. So we got ready to go and what happened??? ...the wind picked up. That day was horrible...just waiting to race, a couple boats got blown into each other. Then it was our turn to line up...

Then it was our turn to line up...but we couldn't keep our points. The wind keep blowing us away so they started the race while everyone was sideways and it was crazy. Boats weren't in their lanes and the wind was pushing against the oars. It was possibly the worst race I ever coxied.

It was my first race at nationals and my first DFL .....I wasn't used to not making it so the rest of that week, I watched the boats go down and cheered my team on. Going to this regatta expanded my view of rowing and helped me as a coxie to use every thing to my advantage.

Well this is it for now..more to come later.

I remember having a race like that once... it was so insane... ended up coming 2nd to last, but I was able to keep the course eventually. Unfortunately they never got us lined up equally so a couple crews were a couple seats up off the start which is a really hard mindset to work with... meh... Certainly teaches you some lessons though.

The best part- The Cooper is my river. I learned how to row on that river, and went through 4 seasons of rowing on it. Great race course, scary river.

That race was nuts though, wasn't it? The whole man-committing-suicide deal freaked us all out because he was found like 10 feet from our docks. The wind was absolute hell, and there were so many boats. It was a mess. Plus there weren't enough docks (luckily since it's our home course, we had our own docks). It did teach you a lot though, didn't it?
