Wow, I have been gone for a veeerrry long time. Sorry 'bout that. I figured I should get back into this to keep me from gettin lazy in evaluating my job as a coxswain.

Quick catch up...

Last spring-went into the grand final of the Youth Invite undefeated; got second by .47 seconds. That loss created a lot of mental and emotional problems for me.

Summer-

Went to a sports psychologist for nationals; was asked to cox our girls team but turned it down.

Fall-

Almost got recruited to Dartmouth to cox lightweight guys (didn't get SATs up high enough and stopped talking to coach); got cut from varsity eight by popular vote; missed my fourth (and probably last) trip to HOC; had lots of personal problems; had great time coxing lightweight guys; learned a lot coxing the light guys.

Winter-

Trained with the girls; had to decide between a smaller team with a lot of new awesome friends on it and my current team which created LOTS of issues; college apps.

Spring-

Came back into spring with better attitude than fall; was just along for the ride, doing my best; felt torn between boats; was having an okay time. Which leads us up to now.

Friday-

Set the varisty open and lightweight guys boats. They did it differently this spring. The fall, coach asked the guys who they wanted, and they voted. He almost overruled them, but let them have their decision. This spring, he asked them who they wanted, but he had the final word. It was nice to not have it seem like a popularity contest. I made the openweight boat, at least until Husky Invite (early April). Then we will re-evaulate and see where I am with my weightloss. If I don't make the weight goal, I am out of the boat, no questions asked. I have to say that would suck, but I would love to cox the lights again. I love those guys so much.

Sunday-

First real varsity practice. Tried twice to recalibrate the speed coach, but it was being a butt and not cooperating. Eventually we just gave up. Workout was 3x7' @34. WAY too high on the rate. The first piece, we hit the rate for a minute. We took the next two at a 32. Was pretty windy but the pieces were okay.

Today-

6 guys PR'd on the 2K workouts (2K. If you don't PR on the 2K then do a 1500, and 1K.) It was sweet. Went out and did 45' of leapfrog with JV. Pretty much womped on them like usual. First half of leaps were at around a 32. Took the second half around 34. The last 7 minutes were up towards a 36 and the last 3 minutes or so were winding it up. We were at a 41 with a 1:29-1:32 splits. The water was pretty tough, but overall, it was a solid practice. In the after practice talk, we decided that we had a Varsity caliber practice. That means that tomorrow, we get to use our new oars. SWEET!!

Overall,

I am having a splendid time so far. We joke about plans to modify our boat (seat warmers, cup holders, flip down DVD displays, bow mounted guns, fun stickers to put on the sides of our M2, clear blades with LED lights flashing), and I feel very included with the guys. I was worried about that, especially after our relations last fall. But things have gotten better, which is part of the reason I got back in the boat.

I feel horrible for the cox of the boat from fall, but she has a kick ass lightweight squad to cox, so I am happy and jealous about that.

First race is in about 2 weeks. Getting fired up.

Well, I hope things have been going well for everyone. Everyone take care, and don't get sick!!

*On a quick non-crew note: I got into Northeastern University in Boston, MA on Saturday. Not sure if I will go, but at least I know that I CAN go to college now!

Never forget to fight. Ever.

WOW sounds like a lot is going on! I wish you the best because it sure sounds like there is a lot of drama going on. Drama is not the best thing for a cox even though sometimes we make it into a necessity. Why not cut to the chase and just cox. Forget all the emotional stuff. The good emotional stuff comes after you're a good cox. drama just isn't necessary. The national team ppl don't like it.

Wow, Northeastern is a very good school. Definately something to consider. I remember boatholding for them last spring on the Cooper- very dedicated crew team, nice strokes and form.

Sounds like you're dealing with a lot of pressure. I think that's a lot to take on as a high school cox. They're definately asking a lot of you, but you're taking it very well. What weight are they asking you to hit, and what are you at now?
