Hey again. Yesterday (September 11) was the first day of crew. Not my first pick of a day to start a good season. We start by doing all coxn's and lightweight's favorite activities, height and weight. Yea! As varsity coxn it was my responsibility to collect all the information. I didn't have to weigh in fortunately. I had been weighed in a week or so earlier. Unfortunately I had just gotten back from vacation in Colorado and due to the high altitude and late nights I couldn't get much of a workout in all week for fear of passing out in any attempt. Also I had just eaten my whole house before I left for practice and unbeknownst to me weigh ins. (We hadn't gone to the grocery store yet so there wasn't much food and I was going to the gym afterwards anyways.) But I did change my weight to what it's really closer to. The day was entertaining as always. Seeing the rowers you haven't seen since the banquet in May is always a surprise. I had one rower, from my boat last fall, take an invitation to kiss my a** literally. He climbed through sail boats to do it. I guess that means either he's really determined to have a hell of a season or I have a nice butt. ; ) Either way I win. I cussed him out considerably for it. And I met the new kids on the team. I always have prided my self on knowing more names of the rowers on both teams than the captains.I am really looking forward to working with all the new guys and especially having the two guy coxns on the experienced team. Last year it was five girls. Well today was the first day on the water. I showed up late because of a prior engagement that I couldn't completely weasel my way out of. We got on the water and I was in my precious Ferrari, THANK GOD! But it was mixed boats (varsity candidates and JV candidates and guys just coming out of novice) which was not something I was expecting. When Ed talked about it last Thursday he made it sound like we were rowing "our" eight. Steering was chaos. Ed had three boats, he normally has two, while Lawrence (Lolo or Larry) had two. While the boats were similarly matched (opens, Ed's guys, and lights, Larry's guys, with their respective coaches) I am used to coxswains who at least take somewhat similar courses or at least follow the varsity coxn around the lake. I almost got run into two or three times today. (There were only 5 boats out today and all of them had coxns who were competent!) My poor guys who are used to like two coxns who are at least predictable had a hell of a time today. Will, my stroke today, Ben, seven, and I all very much enjoyed the faces of our counterparts while they went through practice. While I really hate to see them upset, I am benefiting from this set- up, absence makes the heart grow fonder. And it forces me to keep level headed because the coxns have an excuse when they mess up not like they weren't paying attention. So now that I've vented a little bit I think I'm done for today. Never forget to fight. ~YogiB
