Well here we go I'm off to our university champs on Sat (@11.50pm) And anyway - rather than doing the usual coxing thing - I'm going down to row! ... with the novie woman Awesome - I've rowed nearly a whole season about 3 years ago and then every now and again since. But not for 2km for ages. Its such an odd feeling - I mean for one, I'm being coxed by a novice and it really gets on my nerves that I know I could do the job better! (I mean she says "please" argh - say "now") And then I'm going backwards!! Scary when its all foggy - all I want to do is look over my shoulder every 3 strokes to see if we are going to crash into anything. And the worst thing is, I know exactly what I SHOULD be doing - but putting it into practise is a completely different story! I pull with my inside arm, I rush the slide, I don't drop out, I don't lean back - all these little (and sometimes not too little) things that I would chide my crew about are the things I'm doing now. argh. and its so easy to forget stuff - one stroke I'm shooting my hands out (good) and then the next - well Im pretty sure my nana could do better. (bad) But on the plus side - it should make me a better coxswain! All this invaluable experiance that can't be gained in any other way. other than slogging my guts out! I suppose sometimes you just have to take any opportunity to learn - as much as I'd love to be up the stern wondering why my crew have fast hands one min and slow the next. - bouncyerin

Good luck!!!

Now you'll see how hard it is to row, and you understand exactly what your rowers are going through during the piece. Personally, I think every coxswain should have to learn to row before they cox. I tank train with my boys as much as possible, either at their stroke so they can follow me, or in the bow so I can watch them. I mean, I rowed for three years before coxing, and not only does that help me with the guys, but I also know how hard it is to be coxed by someone who doesn't know what they're changing and doesn't understand your pain. I think this also goes vice-versa, that rowers should have to understand what it is to cox.
But anyway, good luck with the rowing! I'm glad to see that a coxswain is putting themselves out there like this. And remember, all it takes is all you got.

Ive thought about going back but i dont know if im going to. The only problem with having done a year and a half of rowing is that going on to coxing it has made me too sympathetic for the rowers! i feel so mean yelling at them, but im getting over that now. Have fun with the rowing, i applaud you!
