Grrrrr - why are rowers so dumb??

No offence to any rowers who could be reading this - you are obviously one of the smarter ones to find this web site! But any way I believe if it wasn't for the coxen then I do not know what would happen to boats in races.

Take for example this novice crew I'm helping: First, THEY DON'T LISTEN TO THE COXEN!! If I tell them to do something like "put the oars like this" they'll put them upside down or whatever. Then they complain when they get all sand and stones in the handles!! Then they decide "ooo lets throw her in!!" no reason, we didn't win a race they just think it'll be a fun idea. Silly silly people. Hell hath no fury like a coxen scorned!! But its not just that.

The other day I realised when I cox, if I want the message to go through, no matter who I'm coxing, I HAVE to repeat myself. Like "push it, push it" or anything. I know that this happens in other sports but I thought that rowing and rowers were smarter than that!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

novii are dumb by definition=) but the more sand they get on their handles, the faster they'll get over the whole ripped-up-hands thing and get real callouses;) wac-tightrope @ rowersworld

Patience is a virtue. You are dealing with novices and this is more than to be expected. Novices join crew to learn of the joy of rowing, not the pressures. My girls experienced what it really means to push yourself once they got serious and wanted it. It takes time and a coxswain who has no patience is a coxswain with a disorganized crew. I'm sure you weren't perfect varisty quality when you started to cox. You've got to give them time and they will come around. Have team talks. You need to be a team, not just a coxswain and 8 rowers. A team, everyone takes everything at the same time the same way. The focus is to be one, not one boss and 8 subordinates. Remember that! Good Luck!

no offense but novices are stupid! i allways find that you need to get it into there minds right away whose in charge. you need to get it into them they they dont even pick there noses without your permission. they should follow your orders even if it leads you onto a tree or rock or whatever because its your fault not theres so if it ever happened youd be the one explaining yourself not them. if theres someone in particular whos bothering you and your in an eight walk down the gunnel and ask him very quitly if he wants to be in this boat. ive done that on two ocasions and on one the kid said no so we went back to the dock dropped him off and left again. the next day he showed up at practice so i asked him again he said yes and since then hes been pushing himself and he hasnt been a problem since. if you want them to follow you make sure that YOU dont say the stupid things like muttering "what do i do about that log up there" or "wow that other eights comming real close" because they can hear you over the coxbox... they shouldnt know that there was a tree in the river untill your past it and even then they should have had there heads in the boat. anyway good luck

I was quite interested to read about your unfortunate experience with the novice crew(s) you have the displeasure of coxing or more accurately disciplining! Just to give you a bit of back-ground to ensure my comments come across as being shaped with experience, as opposed to outrage (I was a novice not too long ago!). I began rowing for Staines Boat Club (England) (www.Stainesboatclub.co.uk) April 2002 and was fortunate enough to be placed in a crew where the guys and myself were hungry to win, prove ourselves to the club and each other! Our coach Roy, knocked us into "Race-shape" pretty quickly, and within three months we began to have success! We lost out novice status at Peterborough regatta where our hunger for victory showed in surprisingly fast 1000m course times... we beat every other crew (4 lane racing) off from the start, and not one came within 8-10 seconds of our time! The reason I mentioned all this, is because novices aren't necessarily stupid, but perhaps do not have the thirst for winning, nor the vision of what they want to achieve with rowing; but have instead seen or heard only the stereotypical sides to rowing (beer, chicks with sticks, and more beer!)! When I met the chaps with whom I was going to train for the first time (we had not met before April 2002 and joined within weeks of each other so got lumped into one crew quickly!), the hunger to succeed was easy to see in Stuart (Stroke), Aussie (2), 6-pack (3) and me (Bow), and that is what makes us listen to what the coach/cox has to say! May I just also mention our cox..... who is absolutely fantastic.... Caroline, great work and thanks for everything (and that's never said often enough to ANY coxswain!)!!!!!

So... are ALL novices dumb or immature dolts? Not in my experience!

lol, this is ridiculus it is obviously a coxen with little to know control over the crew!!

SILLY Dumb Coxswains!!!! how little they know......

........

yea i am a rower.. and i am entering my third season i am from the same club as bouncy erin and i have seen her cox... and boy oh bouy is she a danger to anything near her boat...

nah jokes, shes a good coxen and to put things in perspective the crew she was coxing contained two rowers who were novices from the previous season and another one who has had even more experience than that.. and a few months ago they were involved in the tipping of an eight!!

yes thats right it was a calm sunny day, no wind and no actual problem with the boat.

It happened because two people hadn't done up there oars on the same side and both realised it at the same time, and both of the to save the oar from being lost pulled it out of the gate!!!!

on thing led to another, and it showed us what happens when u put mentally challenged people in a boat... they were not happy.. (i was, it was very very very funny)

thanks for ur coxing erin, your great!! and i am going to print this comment off for others

I am a rower and I can tell when there are some dumb rowers on our team. Yes the novice are very ignorant but hey they learn! I remember when I was a novice my freshman year and the coach told all ports to raise their hands..to help set up the boat more..literally I raised my hand not knowing what she meant by it...I still laugh at my freshman year

I'm a novice cox, and, as a friend of the rowers, I dont like having them put down that way. I see what you're aiming at, but you gotta give them some leeway. Tell them they gotta pay more attention, suck up their blisters, etc. I think the throwing the cox in is hillarious (not where we are, on the charles river in boston- the water is a beautiful shade of brown) and that these roweres obviously have humor, and like you: if they hated their cox they wouldnt go out of their way to throw you in. just keep practicing!

UMM no offence but maybe its just your crew being immature, our crews are very dedicated and want to be the best they can. Our novices are keen to learn and so yea.... you just gotta get through it. If they don't shut up in the boat .... i did this once got out of my seat crawled over my crew to the boat, we were in a stern loader. And told her (the one time i coxed girls) that if she didn't shut the hell up i was gonna throw her outta the boat and make her swim back.

IT WORKED

the boat had the best set ever that day and w/ no talking.

best of luck to you

i have a lot of novice rower friends and they always tell me its hard to have to listen to the cox cuz at the same time they're learning the basic parts of rowing and their brains are thinking "ok now i need to feather the blade... or wait, is it already feathered?! omg whats going on? why is this person yelling at me??"

and about them throwing you in, maybe your used to more serious rowers, the novice are in it to have fun. Eventually they learn that it can be both, but for now they prolly just want to have fun and dont care about being serious.

Just give them some time. They'll learn. Maybe have a talk with them and just tell them to trust you cuz you know what you are doing. They'll come around tho, no worries!
